01

Identify who sent it and whom they represent

Record the company, adjuster, claim number, insured party, contact information, and date. More than one insurer may be involved.

02

Separate a request from a requirement

Highlight each requested document, interview, authorization, examination, or signature. Ask what is voluntary, what is required by a policy or law, and what the requested scope covers.

03

Check every stated date

A response date in a letter is not automatically the same as a statutory filing deadline. Record both and ask which deadlines have legal consequences.

04

Read release and authorization language closely

A release can resolve claims; an authorization can allow access to information. Do not assume a form is limited to the records or losses you had in mind.
